A silo worker who fell into a machine breaking his arm, leg, eye socket and jaw has been awarded $26,000 in compensation.
The man's employer - NZ Starch Ltd - has also been fined $35,000 after being sentenced at the Manukau District Court on Tuesday.
The accident happened in October last year as the man swept out a grain silo.
He knew he was supposed to turn off the auger in the bottom of the silo but had been shown by a supervisor how to slow down the auger while cleaning the machine.
NZ Starch was fined because it failed to install a safety locking system.
