GNS Science says more eruptions at White Island in Bay of Plenty in the next few days and months are possible.
Volcanic activity there is back to normal on Wednesday, after a plume of steam erupted high into the air on Tuesday morning.
Vulcanologist Nico Fournier told Morning Report that recordings indicate the volcano is not presently building up to a big eruption.
He said the island is privately owned so people cannot be stopped from visiting, but they should exercise their judgment.
But GNS will not send any personnel to the island until there is a lower risk of volcanic activity.
