Nuisance beggars banned from Auckland streets

3:44 pm on 22 August 2013

Auckland Council has voted to banish beggars deemed intimidating or causing a nuisance from Auckland streets.

Council officers will police the bylaw and be able to refer individuals to other state agencies for help.

Councillor Cathy Casey describes the bylaw as heartless and bad law.

She says it's frustrating to see that in submissions, people assume all beggars are homeless.

Councillor Cameron Brewer supported the proposal but urged caution in determining whether intimidation is at play.
