Boys rescued after snow cave collapse

10:16 am on 23 August 2013

Two boys have been rescued from a snow cave at the Whakapapa ski field on Mt Ruapehu.

National Park police said a group of boys were snow caving near an area known as Delta Corner when a cave containing two teenage boys collapsed, burying them both.

Other members of the group saw the collapse, which occurred at 4.50pm on Thursday. The first boy was excavated within a few minutes and the second a couple of minutes later.

Constable Conrad Smith said fortunately both boys had good air pockets and suffered no injuries.

Police will be talking to members of the party this morning to clarify exactly what happened.
