Pilot will be missed by flying community

A friend of the one of the two New Zealanders who died in a plane crash in South Africa says the men were on the last day of their safari.

Richard Primrose was flying with John Walton when their Cessna 182 crashed in the east of the country on Thursday.

African news agency Beeld is reporting the men were flying in formation with two other planes.

Local police say forest workers in the area noticed a plane struggling, then heard a bang.

Mr Primrose, from Pukekohe, had helped organise several trips to South Africa that started in Johannesburg and flew over Victoria Falls and across the Kalahari Desert.

His friend and fellow committee member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Phil Pacey, had been on one of the safaris with him in 2011.

Mr Pacey says Mr Primrose was an experienced pilot, a good man and he will be missed by the flying community.

He says Mr Primrose's wife and two daughters are being cared for by family and friends.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it has offered consular assistance to the families of Mr Primrose and Mr Walton.

Mr Pacey says it could be months or even years before an investigation finds out why the plane crashed.
