A convicted sex offender who fled New Zealand last year before being sentenced has appeared in court after being deported from Botswana.

Christopher Crause, 48, appeared in the Hamilton District Court on Monday morning after arriving in New Zealand on Friday.

He was found guilty in March last year on four counts of sexual connection with a minor, four of indecent acts with a minor and two charges of supplying cannabis to a person under 18.

Crause was granted bail but left the country before sentencing.

He now also faces four new charges relating to his use of a false passport and breaching his bail conditions.

Crause has been remanded in custody for a new bail hearing on Tuesday.

It is likely he will be sentenced on the original charges in October.
