Man jailed for sex offences against teens

A football coach from Costa Rica who admitted a range of sexual offending against teenage girls has been jailed for six years.

Wellington District Court heard Alejandro Gonzalez-Mendez, 37, gave his first victim alcohol and cannabis.

While her family believed he was mentoring and coaching her, Judge Bruce Davidson said, the relationship quickly became sexual.

He said Gonzalez-Mendez encouraged the girl to introduce him to her friends, and he may have committed as many as 250 individual sexual acts against his 10 victims, who were aged between 13 and 15.

Judge Davidson said some of the offending was filmed, and a Probation Report showed Gonzalez-Mendez had no understanding of the seriousness of his offending.

The judge said he gave bizarre explanations for it, including that he was controlled by his principal victim and he gave the girls liquor to monitor their alcohol intake.
