A teenager has been jailed after repeatedly punching a 19-week-old baby in the face because she would not stop crying.

Polash Kabhir, 19, appeared in the High Court in Auckland and was jailed for three years and three months.

Justice Priestley described his violence as dreadful behaviour.

He said Kabhir was trying to sleep in October 2010 when his partner's baby began to cry.

Kabhir got out of bed on three occasions and repeatedly punched the baby before violently shaking her and throwing her into her cot.

The child is permanently blind in her right eye and has brain damage.

Kabhir was also sentenced for attempting to persuade a witness by sending text messages to the child's mother threatening her and offering $65,000 to change her evidence.
