Kina processer fined over wastewater discharge

Southland Regional Council says a large fine given to a seafood-processing company is because it flouted the law.

The council says Cando Fishing Limited was fined $88,000 in the Invercargill District Court on Tuesday, after being found guilty on 17 charges of discharging wastewater into the ocean.

Cando Fishing processes kina at the former Ocean Beach meatworks near Bluff.

The incidents occurred between February and December 2011, despite the council's issuing infringement notices.

Cando Fishing was fined $9000 last year for a similar offence.

The council says the latest fine was much larger because the company continued to operate outside the requirements of the Resource Management Act.
