Action promised on logging truck crashes

Whangarei acting mayor Phil Halse says the district council will do whatever it takes to reduce log-truck crashes on a narrow road.

There have been two deaths and a spate of accidents on Otaika Valley Road, south of Whangarei, where truck drivers have lost control on bends and spilled their logs.

A meeting of more than 70 residents in Maungatapere on Tuesday night demanded action from forestry companies and the council.

Mr Halse said there is evidence to show truck drivers are having trouble getting round some of the tight bends on the narrow road, and the council will look at improving the camber and widening some corners.

He says there is no money from the Government these days for rural roads so the district council will have to find the money somehow.
