The Government is making it compulsory for security guards to undertake a minimum level of training.
This follows law changes requiring guards to be licensed and to undergo background checks.
The new regulations will apply to anyone acting as a crowd controller, personal guard or anyone guarding property.
They will have to do training for conflict management, communication and risk assessment.
Those who already have a licence or certificate of approval, or who apply for one before 1 October, have a year to complete the training.
Those who apply after that date will have to complete the training before getting a licence or certificate.
