The Cobden bridge near Greymouth was closed after a Runanga man crashed a car into it on Tuesday night.
Police say he was taken to Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries after being flung from the vehicle.
The road was expected to remain closed until 1pm on Wednesday.
Diversions were in place at Taylorville and Stillwater.
