A criminal with more than 100 convictions is being sent back to prison for several assaults, including one on a prison officer.

John Gillies, 41, pleaded guilty after the start of a trial in Wellington last month to charges of injuring with intent to injure, an assault by threat and injuring with intent to injure while in prison on remand last year.

He was sentenced in Wellington District Court on Friday to five years and three months in prison.

Judge Stephen Harrop said Gillies, who stabbed a police officer in 1993 leaving him disabled, has spent much of the past 20 years in prison and it was disappointing to see him in court again.
