A survey of New Zealand expatriates shows more of those aged over 55 are staying overseas for work reasons.

The survey conducted by the Kiwi Expat Association questioned about 1200 expatriates.

It found better salaries and an undesirable job market in New Zealand are the reasons expatriates are staying overseas.

Kiwi Expat Association chief executive Sue Watson says the survey shows they are remaining overseas longer, mostly in Australia, followed by Britain and the United States.

She says there was a 6% increase from the 2011 questionnaire in those aged over 55 working overseas.

The survey also shows 8 out of 10 expatriates have a tertiary degree and more than half are earning more than $100,000 a year.
