Police say two brothers who had to be rescued near Whangamata after a jetski trip went wrong were lucky not to be seriously hurt.
Senior Sergeant Dave Litton says the two men, aged 20 and 22, had to abandon their jetski in the Whangamata channel about 2pm on Saturday and swim to shore.
A bystander on the other side of the channel heard them calling for help about 6pm and the local surf lifesaving club went to their rescue.
Neither of the men were wearing lifejackets or wetsuits.
Mr Litton says they were both treated for hypothermia and were lucky they did not end up stuck across the channel overnight.
He says the incident demonstrates that people need to be well prepared before going out on the water.
