Roof collapses in fire in disused kindy

10:59 pm on 2 September 2013

Firefighters have controlled a large blaze that extensively damaged a former kindergarten building in the Canterbury town of Kaiapoi on Monday night.

The fire began about 8.30pm and caused the roof to cave in at the former Kidsfirst kindergarten building on Charles Street.

Firefighters are now damping down hot spots in and around the building. There have been no reports of injuries or damage to other buildings.

The building was well ablaze when firefighters arrived, with five fire engines called in from Kaiapoi, Woodend and Rangiora - as well as an aerial appliance with a boom from Christchurch.

A Fire Safety investigator has visited the scene and will continue the investigation in the morning.
