Murray taken off Law Society register

Auckland lawyer Davina Murray has been removed from the Law Society's register, following her conviction for smuggling contraband to a prisoner.

Murray was found guilty last month of smuggling a cell phone and cigarettes to rapist and murderer, Liam Reid, inside prison.

Law Society spokesperson Geoff Adlam says the society told Murray on Monday that her practicing certificate, which lawyers must apply for each year, will not be renewed.

Mr Adlam says that means she can no longer practise as a lawyer or refer to herself as a lawyer, barrister or solicitor.

He says the Law Society can refuse to renew the practicing certificate of anyone it believes is not a fit and proper person to act as a lawyer.

He told Morning Report she has the right to appeal to the Lawyers and Conveyancers Disciplinary Tribunal.

Mr Adlam says removing someone's name from the register is not the same as being struck off as a lawyer.

He says only the disciplinary tribunal can make that ruling.
