Two charged after Auckland robbery, highway chase

Police have charged two people in connection with a bank robbery, following a chase that ended in a crash on Auckland's Southern Motorway on Monday.

The BMW car police were pursuing crashed into a ute, seriously injuring the ute driver, who is likely to spend some time in hospital.

The 32-year-old driver of the car and a 25-year-old passenger will have surgery this week.

Superintendent John Tims says the pair will be discharged into police custody and will face charges of aggravated robbery, dangerous driving causing injury and failing to stop for police.

The police said on Monday the stolen BMW reached speeds of 140km/h on the motorway before crashing into the ute near the Karaka interchange, causing both vehicles to roll.
