Dunedin City Council has received its highest approval rating from ratepayers in at least a decade.

Findings from the annual residents' opinion survey show satisfaction with the council's overall performance has jumped by 15 points to 54%.

The approval rate is now at its highest level since surveys of this type began in 2003.

Those surveyed were more positive about the city's look and feel, safety and council services but less satisfied with the council's economic development and job creation efforts.

Dunedin residents appear happier with council staff, with a 7 point increase in satisfaction to 67% but not with the mayor and councillors, who sank by 12 points to 33%.
