The man accused of bashing a security guard to death was running from bouncers at a club on the night of the murder.
The 27-year-old, who has name suppression, has denied murdering Charanpreet Dhaliwal in November 2011.
A witness told the court that he had been drinking with the accused and two other men on the night when they were turned away from a club.
The witness, who also has name suppression, said he threw a bottle at the bouncers and then they ran off and hid in a construction site.
Mr Dhaliwal approached the men and the witness described hearing a croaking noise before seeing the accused strike Mr Dhaliwal with a piece of wood.
Mr Dhaliwal was later found dead in a pool of blood.
The trial continues.
