World premiere of film about Everest climb by Hillary

9:16 am on 6 September 2013

A 3D film depicting Sir Edmund Hillary's ascent of Everest will have its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on Friday (local time).

Beyond the Edge was filmed in the Southern Alps and the Himalayas. It integrates original footage and photos from the 1953 expedition led by Sir John Hunt.

Beyond the Edge stars the New Zealand actor Chad Moffitt as a young Sir Edmund, and Sonam Sherpa as Tenzing Norgay.

Director Leanne Pooley says her 3D intepretation takes a documentary approach.

"I hope what people feel is they go on this journey with Ed and they experience what it meant in 1953 to get to the top of this mountain, " Ms Pooley said.

There is no narration in the 3D film, and the voices in it are that of those from the expedition.

The film will be released in New Zealand on 22 October.
