Police say a woman injured in a suspected hit and run incident in Auckland may have been lying on the road for some time before she was discovered.
The 20-year-old is in a critical but stable condition in Middlemore Hospital with a broken leg and pelvis and head injuries.
Detective senior sergeant Alan Symonds says she is lucky to be alive after being dragged under a vehicle for more than 50ms.
He says the driver must have known he had hit someone.
The incident happened when the woman was walking home from a family party in Papatoetoe in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The woman is now in a critical but stable condition in Middlemore Hospital where she is undergoing surgery.
Detective Senior Sergeant Alan Symonds says the woman had been at a family party about 2kms from where she was found.
