The publisher of the New Zealand book that has been shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize says the announcement comes as no surprise to him.

Eleanor Catton's novel, The Luminaries, has made the final list of six international authors for the prize, which will be announced in London in October.

The Luminaries is a murder mystery set on the West Coast during the 1860s gold rush that relies on an astrological narrative.

Fergus Barrowman says Catton is an excellent writer who deserves all the praise she is receiving.
