A man has been found not guilty of the murder of a security guard in Auckland nearly two years ago.

Charanpreet Dhaliwal's body was found in a pool of blood at a construction site in November 2011.

The Crown told the High Court at Auckland the 22-year-old, who had moved to New Zealand from India, was attacked with a wooden post on his first day at work as a security guard.

On Thursday a 28-year-old man, who cannot be named, was cleared of his murder, and an alternative charge of manslaughter.

Mr Dhaliwal's mother and brother were in court, having arrived from India earlier this week. His mother, Karamjit Kaur, says she's in shock at the not guilty verdicts.

Also in court were family members of the accused, some of whom wept when the not guilty findings were read out.

The 28-year-old was found guilty of an assault charge by the jury, which took seven hours to reach its verdicts.
