Contribution to West Coast flood costs

The Government is making $536,000 available to help with recovery costs following serious flooding on the West Coast three years ago.

In December 2010 the region was severely flooded after over 48 hours of heavy rain.

From Haast to Karamea, flooding, slips and debris destroyed roads and also caused considerable land and property damage, as well as loss of livestock in the region.

Civil Defence Minister Nikki Kaye said the Government will reimburse West Coast Regional Council $536,000.

She said the bulk of the expense incurred by the council was for rebuilding stop banks and rock walls.
