Training providers angry at FFTO axing

Training providers in Dunedin say the sudden axing of a programme for unemployed people will leave them without ways to train for work.

The Government is ending the Foundation-Focused Training Opportunities programme, known as FFTO, in favour of other courses for beneficiaries and young people.

Six Dunedin training organisations have run FFTO skills and trades courses for about 300 unemployed people a year.

The Kokiri Training Centre says the end of the programme is so sudden its students cannot finish their courses and the whole centre might have to close.

Methodist Mission Southern says no providers in the city have contracts for the Government's new programmes so its clients will be left without options.

But Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce says there will be courses in Dunedin next year delivering better work and educational outcomes.
