A man has died after falling almost 200 metres down an icy gully on Aoraki Mount Cook.
Police say the 36-year-old New Zealander, who had been living in Melbourne, was approaching the Tasman Saddle Hut on Friday when he fell.
Police, Westpac Rescue Helicopter Trust paramedics and Department of Conservation alpine guides were involved in the emergency response.
Constable Joe Rush of Twizel Police says the man's death has been referred to the coroner.
