About 20 people are searching a roadside near Oamaru for items they believe are connected to the death of a dairy farm worker.

Four men aged from 18 to 23 have been jointly charged with killing Justin McFarlane who was found dead in his rural home at Elderslie last Wednesday.

The police have charged three people for giving assistance to the four accused, and more arrests may follow.

On Wednesday a team of seven specialist searchers from Christchurch and 14 local volunteers were searching a 500 metre section of the Maheno-Kakanui Road south of Oamaru for what police are calling items of interest.

They said a number of items had already been found, but would not give details.
