More than 80 same sex couples married in the first month of such marriages being legal in New Zealand.

Of the 82 marriages, 42 involved women and 40 men.

Twenty-four of the couples were from overseas, with 13 from Australia.

Couples also travelled from Thailand, China, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and the United States to marry in New Zealand.

Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages, Jeff Montgomery, says interest in marriage from same sex couples both in New Zealand and overseas is continuing.

The Marriage (Definition of Marriage) Amendment Act became law on 19 August 2013.
