NZer needs surgery after mall attack

6:48 pm on 23 September 2013

A New Zealander injured during the attack on a mall in Kenya is undergoing surgery.

Andrew McLaren 34, of Kerikeri, has been in Kenya for five months managing a factory for Olivado, an avocado oil company.

Olivado general manager Sarah Nicholls says Mr McLaren and his wife were having coffee at the mall, something they do every weekend, when the attack began.

Ms Nicholls says he is stable and in good spiritis but it will probably be a few weeks before he is able to return to New Zealand.

She says the attack was completely unexpected and the company still considers Kenya safe.

The secretary of the Havelock North rugby club, of which Andrew McLaren is a long time member, Paul McCarthy, says he understands Mr McLaren is upbeat and expected to recover from his gunshot wounds.

Mr McCarthy says the club has been in touch with Mr McLaren's family and is looking to find a way to support him and his family.
