Civil Defence in Waikato is warning people living on Coromandel peninsula to prepare for strong wind gusts of up to 130km per hour and heavy rain.
Bad weather is expected to arrive on Tuesday with up to 120mm of rain expected on the coast.
Civil Defence advises residents to secure loose items and be aware of the potential for trees and other debris to be blown around.
It says flooding could occur, putting further pressure on river systems which rose following rainfall over the weekend.
Civil Defence is also warning of the potential for abnormally high seas.
