Nail biters to fore as America's Cup just keeps going

10:58 pm on 23 September 2013

Supporters of New Zealand's America's Cup challenge are growing anxious after two more American wins slashed the gap between the teams to three points on Monday.

Oracle Team USA is now on five points, with Emirates Team New Zealand still on eight - one win short of taking the cup.

Team New Zealand drew within metres of Oracle during the first race before performing a poor gybe that let their opponent open up a decisive lead.

Fans watching at waterfront venues in Auckland and Wellington were despondent, with some saying they now think Oracle have the edge.

But Team New Zealand's tactician Ray Davies says supporters shouldn't worry just yet, with the New Zealanders still well ahead on points.

He says the boat is performing well and the team is far from giving up.

Turnaround for bookmakers

Bookmakers for the first time have Oracle as favourite in Tuesday's racing, after the team won the last four races.

The America's Cup bookmaker with the TAB , Kieran McAnulty, says there's been a real turnaround in the betting, which the TAB closed at one stage because it looked to be certain that Team New Zealand would win.

The odds against Oracle were then 12 to one.

But the American resurgence now sees Oracle favoured to win race 16 on Tuesday - paying $1.60 against Team New Zealand's $2.20.

The New Zealanders still need only one win to take the cup, although the Americans have closed the gap to 8-5.
