Christchurch police are appealing for the public's help as they continue searching for a man alleged to have raped a woman in the suburb of Sockburn. Police dog teams have been called in.
Police and St John Ambulance were called shortly at 10.50am after reports a woman had been assaulted in her home.
The woman received medical treatment and is now being cared for by family members.
Detective Senior Sergeant Darryl Sweeney says the offender, who was not known to the victim, is in his 40s, with two missing front teeth. He is believed to be Polynesian and was possibly wearing a high-visibility vest at the time.
He says anyone who may know the person or saw any unusual or suspicious activity in the Middlepark Road area between 10am and 11am should contact police urgently.
A scene examination is underway at the house and is expected to continue through to Wednesday.
