The man accused of an attack that left a police officer seriously injured has denied the charges.
Walter Tauatevalu appeared at the High Court in Auckland on Wednesday morning.
His lawyer Graeme Newell entered a not guilty plea to one charge of attempted murder and two charges of assaulting a woman.
Justice Brewer remanded the 36-year-old in custody and he is due back in court in November when it is expected a trial date will be set.
Police say Sergeant Simon Tate was attacked after he pulled a car over in Otara two weeks ago.
Mr Tate was repeatedly kicked and punched, suffering serious head and upper body injuries.
Police say he has had surgery and is continuing to recover at home.
