Police investigating a sexual assault in Christchurch say they have spoken with the victim and her family.

The attack occurred just before 11am on Tuesday at the victim's home in Middlepark Road in Sockburn.

On Wednesday police completed a forensic examination of the woman's home and went door to door in the area, speaking with residents.

Detective Senior Sergeant Darryl Sweeney says a number of people have come forward with information and he is urging anyone who may have seen the offender or any suspicious activity in the area on Tuesday morning to contact police.

The offender is described as a male Polynesian in his 40s, with two missing front teeth and possibly wearing a high-visibility vest.

Mr Sweeney says police hope to release a more detailed description of the offender on Thursday.
