A man accused of targeting elderly people in a string of robberies in Auckland has told the court that he doesn't want a lawyer.

William Murphy is facing 15 charges, including aggravated robbery, indecent assault and kidnapping charges.

In one attack in June, a 74-year-old woman was tied up and beaten in her Pakuranga home.

During his appearance at the Auckland District Court on Wednesday, Judge Brooke Gibson asked Mr Murphy if he would like to enter a plea to the charges.

Mr Murphy responded that he didn't want to answer the question.

A lawyer, Mina Wharepouri, has been appointed as a counsel to assist the court and said Mr Murphy did not think a lawyer could represent him better than he could himself.

Mr Murphy is due back in court next month.
