Evacuated residents allowed home

The occupants of nine properties threatened by a slip in Picton yesterday have been allowed to return to their homes after a night away.

Engineers say the slow-moving slip on a hillside above Wellington Street has stabilised because heavy rain has stopped.

Marlborough District Council assets and services manager Mark Wheeler says the land has had time to dry out and engineers will continue assessing it to see what, if any, remediation work needs to be done.

Mr Wheeler says the hillside will hold up in moderate rain, but engineers may have to call for more evacuations if heavy rain arrives.
