Law firm offers mistake spotters cash

A Wellington law firm is offering rewards for whistle-blowers reporting mistakes in local body election booklets.

Franks and Ogilvie says it will reward people able to prove mistakes, with $1500 offered to the person who reveals the most mistakes before 7 October.

A principal of the firm, Stephen Franks, says the rewards are being offered by an anonymous client who believes defective booklets have been printed and fears for the integrity of the election.

Mr Franks says the issue matters because the booklets offer many voters their only information on candidates, and elections are sometimes decided by a few votes.

He says his client believes many defective booklets were printed.

Radio New Zealand reported last week that pages were missing from booklets detailing candidates running for the Waitemata District Health Board.

However, the electoral office says candidate details are available online and only eight booklets were affected.

Mr Franks says if the problem proves to be significant, court action may follow to challenge some election results.
