Snapper management options

3:37 pm on 29 September 2013

A Government scientist hopes a strategy group being set up will look at all the management options for snapper fishing in Bay of Plenty, Hauraki Gulf and east Northland.

Changes have been announced for the Snapper One fishery, including a decreased bag limit and increased minimum snapper size for recreational fishermen, from April.

From 1 October, commercial fishermen are also to start taking steps to monitor their catch and prevent unlawful behaviour.

Ministry for Primary Industries principal adviser Pamela Mace says it is most likely more measures will be needed to get the snapper population to its optimum level.

Ms Mace says she hopes the new fishery strategy group will consider further options, including having closed seasons and reserve areas for snapper.
