A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the remote Kermadec Islands, 800km northeast of Tauranga on Monday night.

The US Geological Survey says itwas at a depth of 34kms in the volcanic group.

The islands are a protected nature reserve managed by the Department of Conservation, which has workers stationed on the largest island, Raoul Island, usually working with volunteers.
