Change in responsibility for monitoring electronic bail

7:07 am on 1 October 2013

The Department of Corrections is taking over responsibility of monitoring people on electronic bail from 1 October.

Electronic bail is an option for certain defendants who would otherwise be held in custody in prison, while waiting for a court hearing.

Previously, police were in charge of the system, but Corrections is taking over because it already manages the electronic monitoring of people serving sentences.

Deputy national commissioner Maria McDonald says probation officers will take over work done by police personnel.

Ms McDonald says the police will remain responsible for bail generally.
