Tsunami warning sirens a false alarm

9:49 am on 1 October 2013

Bay of Plenty Regional Council says tsunami warning sirens set off in the eastern part of the region on Tuesday morning were a false alarm.

The council does not know how the alarms were set off and is investigating the incident.

It says the sirens prompted several calls to the police and council offices.

GNS Science on Monday issued a new report that found parts of New Zealand could be hit by tsunami 50% bigger than previously thought. Those areas do not include the Bay of Plenty.
