The Government is seeking an operator for a convention centre planned for Christchurch.

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee says the Government will be spreading the net wide to ensure it finds an operator that has the right skills and experience to take maximum advantage of the significant opportunities the precinct will provide.

He says it is a significant step forward in a project that will have huge benefits for tourism in Canterbury and the South Island.

The Government has committed $284 million to the convention centre and further funding options are being explored.

The centre is expected to be opened by early 2017.
