The Government has announced a boost for trade training in Christchurch that it says will help with the city's rebuild.

It's giving the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology $19 million so it can expand its trade training facilities and take an extra 1000 students a year for the next four years.

Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce says the number of enrolments in trades courses since the Canterbury earthquakes has risen and the institute is nearly at its capacity.

He says the Government also plans to spend $100 million redeveloping the institute's campus.

Mr Joyce says the Government is also working with Canterbury and Lincoln universities on their business cases for financial support with their post-quake recovery.
