No criminal investigation over leaked social media posts

Police in Christchurch say there's no case for a criminal investigation into sexually explicit social media postings involving a former Christchurch local-body election candidate.

Last Friday some media published screenshots of a sexually explicit conversation between Paul Findlay, who was a People's Choice candidate for the Hagley-Ferrymead community board, and a person who said they were 15 years old.

Mr Findlay withdrew his candidacy within hours of the posts being made public.

Detective senior sergeant Neville Jenkins says police have found there is insufficient detail in the material for the matter to be taken any further.

He says it highlights the foolishness and risk associated with sending private material of an indecent nature through social networks.
