Drunk driver jailed for fatal crash

A man who took a car while drunk and stoned and smashed head on into another vehicle, killing one person and seriously injuring another, has been jailed for four years and eight months.

Jordan Hyde, 23, was sentenced in the High Court in Wellington on Friday on charges including the manslaughter of Stacey Reweti and driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury.

In February last year Hyde took the car in February and drove erratically around Paekakariki before crashing into a traffic island. Despite the crash deflating two of his tyres, he continued driving on State Highway 1, where he crossed the centre line and smashed head on into another vehicle.

Ms Reweti died in the crash and her partner suffered broken ribs and several other fractures, as well as other serious injuries.

Hyde's lawyer said his client had expressed remorse, but his mental health difficulties make it difficult for him to write to his victims' families to express that.

Justice Ron Young said Hyde had been extremely reckless, continuing to drive when two tyres on his vehicle had deflated after an earlier crash.

Ms Reweti's father wept in court as he spoke of the huge loss his family has suffered after his daughter was killed.
