Environmental group Forest and Bird says it seems premature of the Government to be asking for feedback on draft guidelines for managing the effects of oil and gas development.
Environment Minister Amy Adams has asked specific groups, including environmental and petroleum industry bodies, to respond to the proposed guidelines by 1 November.
The draft protocol includes the management of the effects of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.
An interim report by Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment Jan Wright has found it can be done safely as long as it follows best practice.
But Forest and Bird says Dr Wright is now working on a second, more in-depth report that is not due out until at least the end of the year and that makes the minister's call for feedback a bit premature.
