The police say the driver of one of two cars involved in a crash near Hamilton that injured five people on Sunday night was facing drugs charges and was driving a stolen car.

The collision on State Highway 39, near the intersection of Kakaramea and Meadway Roads, happened just after 11pm.

The car was taken from Rolleston near Christchurch and when officers searched the driver's property, they say they found methamphetamine, a pipe and syringes.

The police say he was already facing drugs charges in Auckland.

The driver's passenger, a 16-year old girl, is being treated for serious injuries at Waikato hospital, and the police are trying to locate her family.

The driver of the other car was also seriously injured and his three passengers suffered moderate to serious injuries.
