The man accused of stabbing an Auckland police officer has been sent for psychiatric assessment.

Constable Todd Martin had to have surgery to his face after he was stabbed with a long-bladed knife in Orakei on Monday.

The police say the accused also threatened three other officers before he was caught outside a block of apartments in Mission Bay soon after.

The 38-year old appeared in the Auckland District Court on Tuesday afternoon, facing three assault charges, as well as a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was remanded in custody until the end of the month to undergo a psychiatric assessment.

A police spokesperson says Mr Martin was discharged from Auckland Hospital about midday on Tuesday and is recovering at home.
