Snow closes roads in South Island

11:21 am on 9 October 2013

Snow has closed Arthurs Pass after heavy rain and snow fell in northern parts of the South Island overnight.

The Metservice says heavy rain is expected to continue this morning in the inland Canterbury and Kaikoura ranges, but should ease by this afternoon.

Significant snowfall is forecast above 400 metres in northern Canterbury and Marlborough.

Flooding in Canterbury

And motorists are being urged to drive with care due to flooding and snow in some parts of the Canterbury region.

Selwyn District Council says some parts in the west of the district have been affected by snow, including Arthur's Pass, Springfield and Castle Hill.

A council spokesperson says heavy rainfall has also caused flooding on a number of roads.

All fords in Selwyn District are closed, as is Lyndon Road due to snow.

Water and wastewater systems are operating as normal but council staff are monitoring them.

Heavy rain could cause flooding in some areas if it continues.
